Ubiquiti Enterprise Campus Switches: What They Mean for Multi-Building Networks
Ubiquiti announced a new core switch, a second-generation Enterprise Campus access line, and resilience work on aggregation. Here is what it costs, which businesses it is genuinely built for, and how to tell whether that is you.

Ubiquiti announced a substantial expansion of its enterprise switching line this week: a new Enterprise Core Switch running 100G with 3.2 terabits per second of non-blocking throughput, a second generation of Enterprise Campus access switches, and firmware work on the Enterprise Campus Aggregation Switch that rebuilds multi-chassis link aggregation and speeds up spanning tree convergence.
That is a lot of specification for one paragraph, and most of it will not change your life.
We are a Ubiquiti partner and we deploy UniFi across a good share of our client base, so we have an obvious interest in telling you this matters. It does, for a specific kind of network. It does not matter at all for most of the businesses reading this, and we would rather say that than watch someone spend money solving a problem they do not have.
Here is the honest read.
What actually changed
Strip out the marketing and there are three things.
There is now a real core layer
Previously the top of a UniFi network was the Enterprise Campus Aggregation Switch. That is a capable device, but on a large network it becomes the thing everything else depends on.
The new Enterprise Core Switch sits above aggregation and gives you a 100G layer with a MAC forwarding table Ubiquiti describes as virtually unlimited. In practical terms, that means the network can grow past the point where the old ceiling used to appear.
Aggregation got more resilient
The firmware update rebuilds multi-chassis link aggregation, which is the mechanism that lets two switches act as one so a cable or an entire chassis can fail without taking the segment down. Ubiquiti also cites faster RSTP convergence under load and hardware-triggered reconvergence.
Convergence time is the gap between something breaking and the network routing around it. On a network carrying voice or video, that gap is the difference between a hiccup and a support ticket.
Access switching got a second generation
The Enterprise Campus line itself is not new, it launched in 2024. What arrives now is the S series: ECS-24S and ECS-48S, plus PoE versions of each.
The 24-port PoE model gives you 16 multi-speed 10 GbE ports, 8 multi-speed 2.5 GbE ports, four 25G SFP28 uplinks, and two 100G QSFP28 stacking ports, all Layer 3, with hot-swappable fans and power supplies.
That dedicated stacking backplane is the meaningful change over the first generation, because it lets a group of access switches behave as one managed unit with fault tolerance at the edge.
The PoE number has a catch
The 1,050W budget on the 24-port model assumes both 600W power supplies running in Shared Mode. Put the switch into Redundant Mode, where one supply can fail without taking the switch down, and available PoE drops to 450W.
You can have the full power budget or you can have power supply redundancy. If you want both, you are buying the 1,200W modules separately.
On a campus deployment sold on resilience, that is exactly the kind of detail that turns into a surprise line item halfway through a quote. Settle it before you count how many access points and cameras the switch is going to carry.
Visibility tooling came along with it
Ubiquiti is also pushing observability: Digital Twin, Time Machine, and Optics Health. Optics Health monitors fiber transceivers, which is genuinely useful on a campus where a degrading optic between buildings is otherwise invisible until it fails outright.

Read the second price column, not the first. Ubiquiti is listing a surcharge separately, and it adds roughly 8 percent across the line. On a campus buying six or eight switches that is a real number, and it is the figure that should go in your budget rather than the headline price.
Those numbers are worth sitting with, because they decide whether any of this is real for your business.
A 24-port non-PoE switch at $1,999 is an approachable number for a mid-sized business. A core switch at $5,393 is not a purchase a single-building office should be making, and we would not quote it.
For a campus replacing a core that everything depends on, it is a normal capital figure for the job, and it comes without the annual per-device licensing that competing platforms attach to hardware in this class. Over five years on a network of any size, the absence of that recurring cost is usually larger than the difference in hardware price.
One scheduling note: only the ECS-24S-PoE is dated September 18. The rest of the line is shipping now.
Who this is actually for
Campuses and multi-building sites
If your organisation occupies more than one building on a shared site, this release is aimed at you. A campus network has a structural problem that a single-building network does not: the links between buildings are long, expensive to replace, and usually fewer than you would like.
That makes them single points of failure by default. Multi-chassis link aggregation across two core switches, with fiber running to each, removes that. Optics Health tells you a run is degrading before it drops.
Schools and private academies fit this profile more often than people expect. A main building, a gym, a wing added in 2004, a portable classroom block. That is a campus, whether or not anyone calls it one. We wrote separately about what IT looks like for schools, and the physical layout is usually the hardest part.
Warehouses and distribution
High device count, heavy PoE draw, and coverage that has to reach the far end of a space where nobody is sitting.
We deployed 43 access points and 28 managed switches on a 10G backbone for a North Jersey warehouse, and the constraints there were exactly the ones this hardware addresses: uplink capacity, PoE budget, and what happens when one switch in the middle of the run dies.
Anyone with a single point of failure at the core
This is the most common version and the least dramatic. One switch that everything plugs into, bought when the business was smaller, now carrying the whole building. It works until it does not.
If that describes your setup and you have been putting off the conversation, the resilience story here is the reason to have it.
Multi-site businesses consolidating
If you are running separate islands per location and want them to behave as one network, a proper core layer is what makes that practical rather than fragile.
Who does not need this
If you have one office, one closet, under about fifty users, and a switch that has not given you trouble, none of this applies to you. The existing UniFi line already exceeds what you will use.
Buying 100G core switching for that environment is not future-proofing, it is spending money to solve a problem you will never encounter. We would rather tell you that now than sell you a quote you resent in six months.
The honest question is not whether the new hardware is good. It is whether your network currently has a ceiling or a failure point that you can actually name. If you cannot name one, you do not need this release.
The part that matters more than the throughput
Ubiquiti is describing this as license-free, and for a business evaluating enterprise networking that is the load-bearing detail.
Most enterprise networking platforms charge a per-device subscription every year, and some of them stop passing traffic when the licence lapses. Across a campus with dozens of switches, over five years, that difference is measured in thousands of dollars rather than hundreds.
It is also a recurring cost that grows every time you add a device, which is precisely when you can least afford it.
That has been the practical argument for UniFi in the mid-market for years, and it is the case we make on our Ubiquiti page, including where the platform falls short.
Extending that model up into genuine core switching is more significant for a school district or a growing manufacturer than any throughput figure in the announcement.
If you are buying switches this quarter
The S series existing changes the calculation. If you were about to refresh access switches, three of the four models are shipping now, so there is no reason to wait unless you specifically need the 24-port PoE version.
The question is port count and PoE budget, and the budget is what people underestimate: 1,050W across 24 ports sounds generous until the cameras and door controllers land on it, and it is only 1,050W if you have given up power supply redundancy to get there.
If you already run first-generation Enterprise Campus switches, the stacking backplane is the reason to look, and it is not a reason to replace hardware that is working.
If you are planning a new build or a fit-out, the core and aggregation decisions are the ones that are expensive to revisit later. Cabling and closet layout get poured in concrete early. That overlaps with structured cabling, and the two need designing together rather than in sequence.
And if your current network grew by accumulation rather than design, which is the usual case, the useful first step is not a purchase order. It is knowing what you actually have.
What we have not done yet
We have not deployed one of these. The Enterprise Core Switch was announced this week and nothing in this post is a review. It is an assessment of what Ubiquiti has described, read through deployments we have already done in similar environments.
We will update this once we have racked one and can say something about how it behaves under load, how the stacking experience actually works, and whether the convergence claims hold up outside a lab.
Anyone telling you more than that today has not touched the hardware either.
